If you know of Nathan Hale Alumni that are serving, or have served in
any branch of the military, we would be proud to share their stories.

Send them to us at info@NathanHaleAlumni.org

If you weren't able to attend Hale's recent VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION, organized by PTA President, Katie White, you missed a terrific program.  The Hale Choir, led by Patti Goble-Duncan '74, and our award-winning JROTC, led by Commander Richard "Top" Frost '65, gave inspirational presentations.  We were happy to welcome retired Major General Jerry Grizzle, Class of '71, as the evening's keynote speaker.

Hale teacher and alumnus, Jason Byrd '93, created a wonderful patriotic music video, which features many of our known Hale Veterans - some of whom were in the audience that night.

Not surprisingly, we have begun to receive requests for copies of the video.  It has been posted on the YouTube web site, temporarily

If this doesn't make you proud to be a HALE RANGER - nothing will...

Doug Stall, Class of '81, "retired" from his law firm last year and is back with the Marines.

Class of '81 rep, Judi Moon-Dittus, has been keeping in touch with Doug.  He is sending her some great reports and photos of his experiences.

LTC Stall is currently serving in Iraq, but began sending updates to his classmates while he was still training for his current mission.

Doug writes: "As part of the largest mobilized force from Oklahoma since the Korean War, I count myself fortunate to take part in this deployment and historical event".

*a post-script from Doug:  One correction to my letter.  The 45th Infantry Division logged 511 days in combat during WWI, not 230.

2/26/08:  One of my companies is working inside a detention facility guarding detainees.  The other three (>400 soldiers) are doing much different work, some that I cannot discuss.  My headquarters is helping plan part of our exit strategy from Iraq.  There are many detainees and they need to be turned over to the Iraqi government before we can leave.  However, Iraq does not have nearly enough corrections officers to assume this role, and no good way of getting them.  My HQ and I must determine what the future needs to look like to turn this mission over to Iraq, and then determine how it is we are going to get to that future end state.  I am interacting with high level Iraqi government officials and other decision makers on our side.

3/11/08:  The next message that Doug shared with his classmates was written by their company Chaplain, about the separation of church and state.  He included a link to a very moving "Battle Hymn of the Republic" video.

What are you doing now?  I am married since August 1, 1986 and have four children - Craig (born 1987), Mason (born 1989), Mariah (born 1995), and Makaela (born 2000).  I am currently the Chief Technical Officer / VP, Technology Services for The Mosaic Company in Renton, Washington.  We are a learning consulting company where I head the software development team.

I believe the most important thing I did during my military career was the work I participated in for Joint Task Force - Full Accounting.  Our mission was to research and recover those who were still considered either Prisoners of War or Missing In Action (POW/MIA) from the Vietnam War.  I spent 1 1/2 years in the jungles of Vietnam interviewing war era eye witnesses and military members who fought for North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the Viet Cong.  I also participated in 15 remains recovery operations.

I consider it one of the highest honors, besides defending our freedom, to be able to say that I helped the families of many MIA service members to have closure to this still painful time in their histories.  We owe the civilian and service men and women who went to Vietnam between 1960 and 1975 a debt of gratitude that many today, or then for that matter, don't fully comprehend.

I wish to pay a special tribute to two friends and fellow service members that I served with at multiple duty stations who lost their lives in Vietnam 26 years after the fall of Saigon.

On April 7, 2001 a Russian made MI-17 helicopter was making a routine trip to prepare for a Joint Field Activity in Quang Binh province, 250 miles south of Hanoi, when the helicopter crashed, killing everyone on board.  Two of the people killed were Air Force Technical Sergeant Robert M. Flynn (Marty) and Air Force Master Sergeant Steven L. Moser.  These men and six other US military members gave their lives in pursuit of the ideal "You Are Not Forgotten".  Marty and Steve, I salute you and miss you both.  God be with those you left behind.

Raymond Flaiz - Class of '83
U S Air Force

Hello Rangers,

My name is Raymond J. Flaiz and I graduated Hale and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1983.  I am currently a Master Sergeant and love what I do.

After basic training at Lackland AFB, TX I was trained as a Medical Technician (medic) at Sheppard AFB, TX

My assignments have included Carswell AFB, TX 1983-1985, Scott AFB, IL 1985-1998, Lackland AFB, TX 1998-2003, Scott AFB, IL 2003-2006, and Osan AB, S. Korea May 2006-present

I have had a great career and still love serving.  I spent 10 years and 4200 flying hours as an in-flight medic onboard the USAF C-9A Nightingale hospital plane.  I had the opportunity to care for thousands of patients in the airborne environment.  I supported a humanitarian medical mission to the Caribbean where our team of doctors, nurses, and medics treated over 6000 patients in 11 days in field conditions.  I have been deployed to Central America as medical support to U.S. drug interdiction operations.  In 2005 I supported medical relief and evacuation efforts at the airport at New Orleans after hurricane Katrina.

My military decorations include the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, two Air Force Commendation Medals, and seven Air Force Achievement Medals.  I am also a marksman with the M-16A2 rifle, and both the 9mm and .38 caliber pistols.

I married my wife Lisa in 1986 and we have two children.  Our daughter, Kristen, is 18 and our son Kevin, is 14.  Kristen has Angelman Syndrome and is severely mentally and physically challenged.  She is an adult now but we care for her at home since we feel we will give her the best care possible.  Our son Kevin is into computers and is learning the electric guitar (I can hear the Stairway to Heaven now).

In my off-duty life my family and I are active in the base chapel.  I also serve as a volunteer Firefighter in O’Fallon, Illinois.  I have civilian certifications as an Illinois State Certified Firefighter and EMT, Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician, American Heart Association CPR Instructor, and Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support advanced provider.  Guess I’m a trouble junkie eh?

Well I hope each Ranger out there has had as great a life as me.  I have truly been blessed with an awesome family and great career in the service of others.  Stay safe and keep your powder dry.

JULY 15, 2006

UPDATE

There will be a brief OPERATION ROSE ceremony on Saturday, July 15, 2006, honoring James and the ultimate sacrifice that he made for his country in Vietnam.  The ceremony will be held at his grave site in Floral Haven Cemetery, at 3 pm.  At least two members of his Marine Corps unit (the Flying Tigers) will be present at the service.

There will be a table by the grave site with James' medals and a 16x20 portrait of him in his uniform, clearly showing his Hale HS ring, on display during the tribute.

We would like to encourage any of his classmates or Hale alumni, who served in the military, to attend this ceremony honoring him.

The following letter was received from Rick Lawrence 5/31/06:

James Richard Teffs (Class of '66) was killed in South Vietnam in 1970.  He was serving with the Marines in helicopter squadron HMM-262 when his craft went down on a mission.  He is buried at Floral Haven Cemetery [Tulsa] where I now work as a Family Service Counselor helping families & individuals set up their personal pre-arrangements.

I discovered James' grave this past spring and started doing some research on him.  James has no family still living, other than a half-brother who lives in the Oklahoma City area.  However, his old unit from Vietnam did have a website and I contacted them.

They were very happy to hear from me as they had no record of where James was buried.  They have a program called OPERATION ROSE where a couple of the old squadron members travel to the gravesites of their brothers who lost their lives in Vietnam and have a brief ceremony honoring their fallen comrade.

They plan to come to Tulsa on July 15th or July 18th (2006) to honor James and his ultimate sacrifice.  I am trying to contact all of his high school classmates as well, to see if anyone (ESPECIALLY PRIOR MILITARY PERSONNEL) would be interested in attending this ceremony and possibly bringing flowers.  It would be a wonderful tribute to this man who was once your classmate and who died so long ago, so far away.

Paul writes: In 1970 I went to Strategic Air Command and was assigned to fly the KC-135 at Travis AFB near San Francisco, CA.

I had numerous duty assignments around the world, including three

tours to the Viet Nam war zone where I flew 63 combat sorties and was awarded the Air Medal.

John Schubert - Class of '88
U S Air Force

I entered basic training in January of 1991, about two days after Desert Storm began. I entered in as "Open - Electrical", which meant I'd get any electrical career field opening available. I left Basic at Lackland AFB for Lowry AFB, CO to begin training as a satellite systems operator. The summer of 1991, I reported to Falcon AFS (now Shreiver AFB) to begin a career in the field of space. I operated GPS satellites for about 3 years before volunteering for an assignment in Alaska.

Around the summer of 1993, I left for Clear AFS, Alaska, which is about 60 miles south of Fairbanks along the Parks Highway. Up there, I was a tracking operator for the early warning of any ICBM (nuclear missiles) threats against North America and to track objects in space, using a system called BMEWS.

Since it was a one year, remote, "overseas" tour, I returned in the summer of 1994 and performed GPS satellite operations again (I pulled some favors of a few Chiefs). I completed a Bachelors Degree in Organizational Management before getting an assignment to AETC.

In 1995, I volunteered for a special duty assignment as an AETC instructor to teach cross-trainees and new Air Force members in GPS satellite operations. This brought me out to Vandenberg AFB in the summer of 1996, as Space Command stood up our squadron amongst other space-related training squadrons. I taught for two more years before separating June of 1998 as a Senior Airman. College Finals always fell during my test cycle for Staff Sergeant, so I never studied much for Staff (E-5). I finished an MBA at Pepperdine just after leaving the Air Force.

After a 5 year break, I re-entered the Air Force's Guard component as a Staff Sergeant. April 2004, I was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. It took a few years, but I recently finished school and certified as a Milstar satellite operations officer at the 148 SOPS, CA ANG, Vandenberg AFB, CA.

My civilian job is currently a Technical Support manager for a manufacturing company and I own a small, retail business.   Contact John Schubert

Paul Curry - Class of 1988
U S Air Force

After graduating from Nathan Hale High School, I enlisted in the Air Force and arrived at Lackland AFB, Texas, in January 1989 for basic training. Upon graduation, I entered the Security Police Academy at Lackland AFB, TX finishing as top gun graduate in my class.  I went on to Fort Dix, New Jersey where I attended Ground Combat Specialization School and graduated in December 1989.

I received a direct-duty assignment to the 4392nd Security Police Squadron, Vandenberg AFB, CA, arriving in December 1989 where I was deployed to Howard AFB,

Panama in support of Operation JUST CAUSE.  In 1991, I was reassigned to the 633rd Security Police Squadron, Anderson AFB, Guam where I was deployed in support of Operation FIERY VIGIL to assist in the evacuation of Clark AB, Philippines when Mt. Pinatubo erupted.  I was eventually deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

In 1993, I was assigned to the 43rd Security Police Squadron, Laughlin AFB, TX. I was selected as the Non Commissioned Officer In Charge of the first and only Department of Defense Illegal Alien Suppression Team.  My team performed combat patrols with Drug Enforcement Agency personnel and Border Patrol officers, aiding in drug interdiction and smuggling missions and arresting illegal aliens along the United States border with Mexico.

In 1998, I was reassigned to the 741st Security Forces Squadron and became the assistant NCOIC of Security Forces training.  I was responsible for training security forces on the tactical techniques needed to recapture a nuclear weapon in a combat environment.  I developed Security Forces Computer Based Training that is still used across the Air Force today.

I was deployed to Afghanistan after 9-11 where I completed a 4 month deployment.  I was then deployed for and during the early stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

After returning in 2003, I retrained into the Computer Network and Switching career field. I was assigned to the 48th Intelligence Squadron at Beale AFB, CA.  Since arriving at Beale AFB, I have served as Non Commissioned Officer In Charge of Mission Imagery Segment. I am a computer systems programmer and technician.  I maintain the network responsible for the U-2 Spy plane, the Global Hawk and Predator unmanned aerial vehicles.  I have an associate degree in Criminal Justice, an associate degree in Information management and 3 classes away from a Bachelor Degree in Information Technology Management, with a minor in Intelligence.

My military awards include the Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Global War On Terrorism Medal, Air Force Short Tour ribbon, Air Force Long Tour Ribbon, Air Force Small Arms Expert ribbon with star device, Navy Small Arms Expert ribbon with the “E” device, Outstanding Unit with Valor ribbon with three oak leaf clusters and the Air Force Training Ribbon.

I am divorced and have 2 children that live with me.  Amanda 13 and Carson 8.  I plan to retire in the next couple of years and have early thoughts of moving back to Oklahoma.  I haven’t been in touch with anyone from my graduating class since approximately 1991 so if you know me, email me.  Contact Paul Curry.

Fallen Marine is honored at Capitol
By TULSA WORLD CAPITOL BUREAU 4/14/2006

A House resolution is read remembering the Coweta man, who died last year in Iraq.

OKLAHOMA CITY - The state House of Representatives on Thursday honored fallen Marine Sgt. James Randolph Graham III, whose family watched from the gallery as a resolution was read.

Graham, 25, of Coweta was killed Aug. 1 in a suicide attack in Iraq as he was on duty patrolling near Hit, a small town in the Al Anbar province.

The resolution noted that Graham's greatest love was his family, including his wife and their two sons.

Rep. Wade Rousselot, D-Wagoner, sponsored the resolution.

Several of Graham's family members attended the ceremony, including his parents and grandparents.

"We were very honored," said Katrina Graham, who worked with Rousselot on the resolution. "My purpose is to make sure nobody ever forgets" Graham and other service members in the Iraq war.

Rousselot said an effort is under way in the Legislature to change the name of a portion of Oklahoma 51 through Coweta in honor of Graham.

Pals recall fallen Marine as go-getter

By RHETT MORGAN Tulsa World Staff Writer 8/4/2005

COWETA -- At roughly 5 feet 7 inches tall and 155 pounds, Marine Sgt. James Randolph Graham III didn't sport a large chassis, friends say. But his engine was always revved. "That dude had a lot of testosterone," said Kristi Allen, whose husband, Spencer Allen, was the best man at Graham's wedding. "You could double-dog dare him and you could be sure he would do it. No fear. That was his motto."  Spencer Allen said Graham's decision to join the military suited his character. "He knew in the Marines it was going to be go, go, go," he said. "That's just the kind of person he was."

Best known as "J," Graham was killed Monday by a suicide car bomber during a combat operation near Hit, Iraq, a small town northwest of Ramadi in Al Anbar province, the military reported. He was 25. Graham was in the Anti-Tank Training Company in Broken Arrow and an operator of TOW missiles - hand-held tube-launched rockets - in the Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division.

Maj. Michael Sims, an inspector-instructor at the Marine Reserve Anti-Tank Unit, said Graham was mobilized in January, training at Twentynine Palms, CA, and then sent to Iraq a month later.   Allen Martin remembered running into Graham at a Tulsa convenience store the day the United States began bombing in Iraq.  "He said, 'I want to be over there so bad I can't stand it,' " he recalled Graham as saying.   "He told me: 'This is what my Marine Corps training has been for. It's been preparing me for this. And now it's going on and I'm in Tulsa. I want to be over there.' "

Services for Graham were held August 13, 2005 at the Floral Haven Chapel in Broken Arrow.

Donations can be sent to the James Graham Memorial Fund, First National Bank of Coweta, PO Box 600, Coweta, OK 74429, or to Melissa Graham for the benefit of J. Graham, Spirit Bank, 9618 S Memorial Dr, Tulsa, OK 74133.

Highway dedication to honor hero
08/22/2006 by Christy Wheeland, Coweta American News Editor

Just a little more than a year ago, one of Coweta's own was killed in the line of duty while serving with the military in Iraq.

Sergeant James Graham III, 25, was killed in action Aug. 1 in the Al Anbar Province while conducting combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On Saturday, Aug. 26 Sgt. Graham will be remembered when a portion of Highway 51 from 141st Street to the Muskogee Turnpike is renamed the Sergeant James R. Graham Memorial Highway.

An official dedication ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in front of Coweta Junior High. The public is invited to attend.  Conducting the ceremony will be State Rep. Wade Rousselot, D-Okay, and Marines from Broken Arrow.

Sgt. Graham trained with Anti-Tank Training Company in Broken Arrow and was assigned to TOW Section, Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division.

According to Rep. Rousselot, he first got involved with the Graham family shortly after their loved one was killed in action. He attended a town meeting in Coweta to discuss a possible picket at Sgt. Graham's funeral by a group out of Kansas.  "Right away we went to work on legislation to do away with picketers at funerals, and that was a good thing," Rousselot said.

The state representative said he has since been contacted by Sgt. Graham's mother Katrina to see if a portion of Highway 51 could be dedicated in her son's name.  "I told her we'd do what we can, and on the last day of session we got Senate Bill 1412 passed," Rousselot noted. "Both the Senate and House passed the bill and Governor Brad Henry signed it into law."

Signage for the memorial highway will be provided by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.  "Highway 51 from 141st Street to the Muskogee Turnpike will be a nice stretch," Rousselot added.

Hosting Saturday's event will be American Legion Post No. 226, Wagoner County Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 88 and Rolling Thunder.

Immediately following the highway dedication, Rolling Thunder members will lead the Graham family along the section of Highway 51 honoring their loved one. The procession will conclude at the American Legion Post where the family and their guests will be treated to a meal.

The Graham family, along with local veterans, encourage the public to attend Saturday's dedication ceremony honoring Coweta's fallen hero.
