Martin enjoying second profession
By BARRY
LEWIS
Tulsa World
Sports
11/2/2006
Jenks basketball coach Clay Martin was a standout in that
sport as well as football when he played for Hale during the early
1990s.
Martin still is thriving in both sports. In addition to his coaching
duties, he is in his second season calling high school football
games as a line |
|
judge.
"I love it," Martin said. "It's good to be back on the football
field. I've always enjoyed both sports."
Martin's work as a football official could benefit him as a coach.
"It's given me a whole new respect to how much goes on in a game,"
Martin said. "It helps me prepare myself. I know now there are some
things I need to argue and some that I probably need to leave
alone."
Martin, whose Trojans are projected to reach the Class 6A state
tournament again after reaching the semifinals last year, could have
a long-term future as an official. "I went into it with sort of as
a second-job mentality," Martin said. "But with the training I've
received from the GTOA (Greater Tulsa Officials Association) and the
friends I have made officiating, I want to do it as long as they'll
let me." |

Ed. Note: I realize that it may be almost sacrilegious
to post a link to a Jenks basketball video here, but since Clay did
support his alma mater by participating in the Alumni Basketball
game a couple of years ago...

HALE TEACHER IS FINALIST FOR TPS 2005 Teacher of the Year
Jason Byrd, Hale Class of
'93, grew up in
a teaching family, whose father was a TPS teacher for 30 years. A Nathan
Hale High School 9th-12th grade math teacher, Mr. Byrd believes anyone can
teach a student to solve an equation, but he wants his students to become
effective citizens and better leaders. “I think my greatest attribute as a
teacher is my ability to build relationships with students that allow me
to have a large influence on their life,” he says. To that end, Mr. Byrd,
is the Student Council advisor, and has guided Hale Student Council teams
to the prestigious office of State President twice in the past three
years. He is a Hale Alumni (class of 1993) and has been a teacher a total of eight years. |
