OR., under the direction of Crown Memorial Center in Milwaukie,

|
In the summer of
1954, at just 7 months old, she was stricken with acute
paralytic polio. The disease left her a paraplegic. As a
1-year-old, she was sponsored by Douglas Aircraft Co. in the
polio queen contest for the March of Dimes. Her father was an
employee of the company.
The contest to find the "Queen of the March of Dimes" was
publicized by The Tulsa Tribune. Her photo was published
alongside those of 11 other little girls with infantile
paralysis. Readers could vote for their favorite by donating a
dime per vote.
On Jan. 21, 1955, the day she was announced the winner of the
contest, the Tribune described Janet as "the little blonde
beauty with sparkling blue eyes." She represented the
March of Dimes during its fundraising telethons Jan. 28-29,
1961.
Blackwood attended
Tulsa Public Schools and graduated from the University of Tulsa
with a degree in art education. |
She remained
active throughout her life, playing wheelchair basketball,
teaching art classes and building and carving unique baby
cradles. Her artwork was displayed throughout the Mulino, OR
area.
She is survived by her husband, Steve Blackwood; her mother,
Myrna Dahlstrom; a son, Zac Blackwood; two daughters, Snow
