Rites set for Tulsa
attorney
published in the
Tulsa World, Sunday, September 27, 2009
Jon B. Wallis, a Tulsa attorney who practiced law as a sole
proprietor for 36 years, died Thursday. He was 64.
|
Wallis was born Feb. 8, 1945, in Dallas. His family moved to Tulsa
when he was a child, and he graduated from Nathan Hale High School
and Northeastern State University.
Wallis worked days as a clerk at the courthouse while he attended
the University of Tulsa School of Law at night. He graduated from TU
in 1973 and passed the bar exam the same year. From then on,
he was his own boss, his family said. "He never worked for
anybody," said his wife, Elizabeth Wallis.
"I think it was extremely scary," said his son Jason Wallis. "Once
you throw out a shingle, you'd better get some clients if you want
to eat next month." |
Wallis took any case that came his way, from divorces to criminal
cases. But once he was established, Wallis began focusing on the
cases he loved most: personal injury cases and medical malpractice
lawsuits against doctors, insurance companies and local hospitals.
He also liked to take on oil and gas cases.
Wallis loved to be in the courtroom and thrived on the "intellectual
matching of wits against adversaries," his son said.
|
 |
In the late 1970s, he was certified to appear before the U.S.
Supreme Court, as well as the Oklahoma Supreme Court.
Wallis continued to work even after he began treatment for
pancreatic cancer. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter, a
32nd-degree Mason and a Shriner.
Wallis is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; two sons, Jason Wallis of
Houston and Justin Wallis of Tulsa; a daughter, Jill Wallis of
Tulsa; and two granddaughters. |
